In the sixties, Keith Sonnier was a pioneer in the use of new materials such as neon. His post-Minimalist installations challenged the preconceived notions of sculpture and became his most representative works. Neon with Cut Glass belongs to a series that the artist began in the late sixties. The rigid forms of industrial production such as sheets of glass supported against the wall are brought into question by the neon light, which introduces a marked pictorial quality to the installation. The language of Minimalist sculpture is transformed into an architecture of light.
