Antoni Llena
Escultura dissecada
Dissected Sculpture
1968
Formal and poetic research into notions of fragility, airiness, and the exploration of humble materials like paper and foam, have been constant features of the work of Antoni Llena. This has been the case since his 1960s drawings made with altered paper, the series Escultures dissecades [Dried Sculptures] and Escultures per portar a la mà [Sculptures to Be Carried in the Hand], his efforts to capture the corporeal gesture of walking on a foam surface, and up to his paintings from the 1980’s, chromatic compositions created with paper cuttings. Using a broad variety of materials, he has worked in actions, drawing, painting and sculpture. Llena is able to turn cardboard or a cutting into a testing ground, or an experience based on volume. With great simplicity, radicality and a will to purity, he produces a fragile art that obliges us to reconsider the constructive space of art and the artistic gesture itself.
