Between 1948 and 1951, Modest Cuixart was one of the members of Dau al Set, a Catalan avant-garde group which, at the height of Franco’s dictatorship, espoused pictorial modernity while embracing the magical and mysterious dimension of reality. These works, made between 1946 and 1950, are from this same creative moment in time. With meticulous draughtsmanship and complex symbolism, Cuixart infuses them with a rich dreamlike imagery that explores parallel worlds, home to living species and realities, human creatures and heterogeneous communities. He conjures up a universe of organisms and textures, forms and morphologies, patterns and structures that reveal the affinities and kinships of the animal world in all its richness, showing what draws us together and makes us alike.
