In 1988, ​​Pasqual Maragall, then Mayor of Barcelona, formally commissioned the U.S. architect Richard Meier to design the project of the new Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona – MACBA), for ​​which a Consortium had been established the same year. On 28 September 1990, the foundation stone was laid for the building, located in the middle of the Raval district, and five years later, on the weekend of 30 April to 1 May 1995, the Museum opened for the first time, with a huge response from the public: thirty thousand people visited the new building. On 30 November, the first exhibition of the Collection was presented, marking the beginning of a series of exhibitions and activities that continues to this day.---The MACBA Collection contains the models of the building that Meier's architectural team presented during the evolution of the project and a set of drawings created between 1987 and 1995 that attest to the ideas behind all the stages of the building. Ranging from initial sketches to when the identity of the building was already well defined, they reveal the entire construction process. Speaking of his work in Barcelona, ​​Meier said in an interview in 2011: ‘The Raval neighbourhood of Barcelona was at its nadir.
