A tireless experimenter, Aurèlia Muñoz learned how to macramé during a period of convalescence. She soon turned this ancestral knotting technique into a tool to liberate textile art from frontality, creating a true dialogue with volume and space. With works that straddle the sculptural and architectural object, her series of winged creatures, birds and sails that she called ‘beings’ are among her bestknown works. Designed to be hung or free-standing, some are clearly aerial, while others are reminiscent of human forms, or appear to be floating. Dyed by the artist herself with earth and natural pigments, these tactile objects experiment with the torsion of planes and shapes in space. Ens místic, from 1977, refers to other works from the late seventies such as Ens comunitari (Communal Being) and Ens social (Social Being). Commenting on the human condition through textile art, Muñoz developed a unique ability to think with her hands.
