Although her early practice singled her out as a pioneer of conceptual art in Catalonia, Sílvia Gubern works from life rather than concept. In work from the 1980s, she was already invoking the symbolism of magic and icons connecting us with Mother Earth, such as serpents and moons. Later, in the 1990s, she delved into diverse traditions of knowledge, such as Kabbalah, alchemy and quantum physics, to integrate art, knowledge and healing. This is the period when she created her Escultures primordials, made out of fragile materials such as glass, feathers and brass. Subtle and simple, her human figures evoke primal realities and the sacred origins of both art and life.
