Pere Daura
Sense títol
Untitled
ca. 1929
Known internationally as Pierre Daura, this Catalan painter born in 1896 arrived in Paris at the age of eighteen. Together with Joaquín Torres-García and Michel Seuphor, in 1929–30 he formed the group and magazine Cercle et Carré, which favoured geometrical abstraction over Surrealism. Other members of the group were Hans Arp, Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky, Fernand Léger and Kurt Schwitters, among others. Interested in pictorial structure, at that time Daura created a type of painting in which patches of colour act as compositional fields. Without ever renouncing the rigour of geometry, his is a solid and vibrant body of work with figurative elements. Joining the Republican Army during the Spanish Civil War, in later years he lived and worked between France and the United States.
