Rogelio López Cuenca uses appropriation to sabotage and question the assumed order of things. While other of his works are based on furniture, urban signage and slogans, in Beaux Arts he uses the commercial image of large brands and companies to bring art into the public space and question its role in the economy. From the familiar logos of multinationals and organisations of the nineties he extracts the letters spelling B-E-A-U-X-A-R-T-S. The artist thus blurs the distinction between sign and referent, short-circuiting the popular imaginary. For López Cuenca, this appropriation of communication elements, like the logo, function as a found poem. Aware that today, to intervene in the world we must intervene in the representation of the world, López Cuenca does not renounce irony and humour and hopes to reverse the course of events in favour of poetry and art.
