Irony is a recurring feature in the work of Rosemarie Trockel, whether in her well-known machine weavings or her sculptures and objects. In the former she questions the cultural signs we are all familiar with, revealing their arbitrary character, while with her objects she strives to erase any expectation of habitual meaning or use. If an enclosed object with a peephole at eye height seems to invite us to look inside, it will probably not correspond to what we were expecting. Likewise, expectations of meaning and signification are unstable factors that have been historically conditioned. As one of the most influential conceptual artists in Germany, Trockel unleashes a broad range of subversive aesthetic strategies. Provocation, the pleasure of paradox and the questioning of all cultural meanings, are combined with physical experience and perceptive interaction with the work of art.
