Carmen Calvo
Ojos
Eyes
1995
With her interest in the archaeology of objects, Carmen Calvo took a door from her studio and, after eliminating the first layer of aluminium, inserted into it a set of small eyes made of glass and iron. As with many other works by this artist, the idea of the fragment and multiplicity is combined with the inclusion of some part of the human body. In this case it is the eye, a highly symbolic organ that has been widely integrated into the Western artistic tradition, from the Romanesque to Surrealism. The retinal gaze connects with mental realms related to the personal and collective unconscious, whether in connection to the internal gaze, the universe of dreams, the divine gaze or the artist’s point of view. What reality is summoned by the plurality of eyes observing us? While it is true that Carmen Calvo includes objects with great simplicity, she will never renounce their metaphorical capacity nor complexity.
