In an attempt to overcome matter Expressionism and open up new avenues of artistic expression, Lucio Fontana publishes his Manifesto Bianco (White Manifest) in 1946. He develops his theory of Spatialism, which promotes the abolition of the illusory space of painting and its replacement by real space. This theory takes shape in a long series of works called Concetto spaziale [Spatial concept] (1950–1968), in which the artist makes holes and cuts in almost monochromatic canvases. Recognition of the existence of unlimited space leads him to the conquest of a new dimension of perception, such that his interventions expand towards the surrounding physical space and towards the viewer.
