In Carmen Calvo’s extensive production, the artist tends to incorporate objects and images related to contemporary social imaginary, a sum of elements that she often uses to denounce the situation of inequality in which women have lived for centuries and which, in many parts of the world, they still do. In this context, Calvo often uses elements such as mannequins, eyes, legs and hair. This is the case of Et pourlèche la face ronde (And Lick the Round Face), from 2013-16. While in other works she refers to pubic hair, in this case she uses long hair to lick the round face of the Earth. A mantle of hair hangs from a large globe, as if it were a cloak, detonating powerful meanings. While hair has been a symbol whereby women are seen as figures of beauty, shaving their head has also been a form of punishment, a way of annulling them physically and mentally, as we have seen throughout history. But Calvo’s work also offers a reading of hope through the generous and tireless growth of hair, which grows, despite everything, on the round surface of the Earth.
