Artist

Mathias Goeritz

Mathias Goeritz was born in Gdansk (Poland), spending his childhood and youth in Berlin. Here he began to study medicine, but soon left to train at the Berlin-Charlottensburg School of Arts and Crafts, where he earned his doctorate in philosophy and the history of art. With the introduction of National Socialism, he left Germany in 1936. After several European destinations, he arrived in Morocco in 1941 and in 1945 in Spain, where he worked with Joan Miró and Àngel Ferrant. In 1952, he moved to Mexico, where he settled until his death. Although his early painting is marked by war and the influence of the German Expressionist groups Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter, he soon evolved from expressionism to abstraction, incorporating an interest in architecture. The dialogue between painting and architecture colours the whole of his later work, which greatly influenced his fellow artists and architects in Mexico. One of his central aesthetic concepts is that of emotional architecture, an architectural current that uses clean design and the construction of towers, always valuing the sculptural over the functional. Göeritz argued that architecture should be a work of art in the sense of inviting us to inhabit its different spaces in order to experience different emotions.
