Marine Hugonnier
Raised between the USA, France and Morocco, Marine Hugonnier studied Philosophy at the University of Tolbiac, Paris, and Anthropology at the University of Nanterre, also in Paris, and Art at the Fresnoy Studio National des Arts Contemporains, Lille, France. She currently lives and works in London. With an extensive range of interests that includes film, photography, sculpture and work on paper, her production focuses on the construction of the gaze and the image, both in a cultural sense and from a more metaphysical point of view. Hugonnier questions the conventions of representation by interrogating the different possibilities of the camera and the gaze. The artist herself summarises her work as research into the ‘politics of vision’.
She has exhibited internationally since 2000, with solo exhibitions at FRAC Languedoc-Roussillon, Montpellier (2002), Philadelphia Museum of Art (2007), Musée d'art moderne et contemporain, Geneva (2008), Mälmo Konsthall, Sweden (2009), Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead (2014), Filmmuseum, Vienna (2016;, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul (2020), Galerie du Jeu de Paume, Paris (2022) and Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao ( 2023). Her work is included in collections such as MoMA, New York; Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; National Gallery of Art, Washington; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; and MACBA, Barcelona, among others.
