Trained in art at the universities of Santiago de Compostela and Vigo in Galicia, Spain, María Ruido (Xinzo de Limia, Ourense, 1967) teaches in the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona. A visual artist, researcher and cultural producer, since 1998, she has been developing interdisciplinary projects about the social construction of the body and identity, the labour system in post-Fordist capitalism and the construction of collective memory. She also works with video, video action and video installation, incorporating and critically rethinking archive materials, interviews, experiential materials and her own photographic production.

Her documentaries have been shown at the New York Independent Film Festival (2009), where she was awarded the prize for best international documentary, the Bilbao International Documentary and Short Film Festival (2011), the Barcelona X Screen Festival (2012), the Marseille International Film Festival (FIDMarseille, 2012) and the Tunis International Human Rights Film Festival (2015), among many others. Solo exhibitions of her work have been held at the Sala Montcada in Barcelona (2003), the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid (2008), the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil in Mexico City (2009), the Centre d’Art Santa Mònica in Barcelona (2015) and the Centro Cultural de España in Buenos Aires (2015). She is also the author of numerous published works.
