Biography

The Portuguese artist Leonor Antunes frequently takes figures within the history of modernist art, design and architecture as the starting point for her work. Those she features are often less well-known figures, particularly women, for example Eileen Gray, Mary Martin or Clara Porset. In this manner, Antunes constructs an alternative series of histories that counteract canonical narratives and propels different forms of modernism into the foreground. In the works shown here, Antunes establishes a dialogue with the abstract-geometric designs of the German Bauhaus artist and textile designer Anni Albers, after whom they are named, but also the wire sculptures of the German-born, Venezuelan artist Gego.
