Biography

Sofia Asencio

Sofía Asencio (Elche, 1971) studied contemporary dance at the Institut del Teatre of Barcelona. She began her professional career in musical reviews and music hall shows, later joining various dance companies such as the Vicente Sáez company, Lanónima Imperial, Mudances, General Elèctrica or the Cia. Acta.

In 2000, together with Tomàs Aragay, she created the Societat Doctor Alonso, a theatrical platform for performance research and production. In 2020 she became part of the curator team of the Sâlmon Festival 21 together with Ariadna Rodríguez, Bea Fernández, Iñaki Alvárez and Dianelis Diéguez.

In Noche cañón, her project for Artists in Residence, Asencio works in collaboration with Beatriz Lobo and Tomàs Aragay to find their own way to generate text within the comedic monologue genre. This is a work in direct interaction with the public, in which the limits of the archetypal forms of humour and roguishness are displaced, working on pace, silences, paradoxes, foolishness, overacting, plays on words and phraseology.
