For the second year in a row, MACBA joins the Jugada a tres bandas (Ja3b) project, an initiative that connects art galleries, curators and artists, and takes place in Madrid and Barcelona simultaneously.
On this occasion, a curator or curatorial team from each city –Beatriz Alonso from Madrid and Ingrid Blanco and Antonio Gagliano from Barcelona– have been commissioned to make a selection of video art works from the MACBA and Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo (CA2M) collections, respectively. Both selections will be presented at the two centres.

‘What we call absurd is simply our ignorance’
This selection of works offers a brief overview of the presence of the absurd as a strategy in some of the videos in the MACBA Collection.
We live in a world governed by innumerable codes that are beyond the logical understanding of our ordinary everyday life. Even so, we are thrown off balance when artists use irrationality to question and dismantle that same reality. In spite of the many examples of this strategy in the course of the twentieth century, we still seem to expect art to provide a certain dose of exceptionality or spectacle, and we continue to resist it when it deals with subjects that are banal or that add even more uncertainty to our lot.
The works in this selection differ in their intentions and their contexts, but they all entail a small revolution against prevailing norms and behaviours, handed-down conventions and the expectations created by art. They begin with highly regulated structures and test their limits in order to interrupt or question them, by means of simplicity, exaggeration or an apparent lack of meaning.

This selection seeks to connect various narratives that feature the body and its performative capacity. The videos all hone in on moments or intervals of encounter and interaction in public and private spaces.
They are narratives that don’t rely on written texts, but show episodes heightened by noises, music, shots, editing and actions. They are essentially ‘silent’ stories focused on fortuitous discoveries, impersonations and upward progressions that come together to create fictions of varying depths.

BIOGRAPHIES
Beatriz Alonso (Madrid, 1981)
Is a curator and researcher. She holds a degree in Art History from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and a Masters in Contemporary Art from the Universidad Europea de Madrid. In 2010, she was Centre Pompidou researcher and part of Chatherine Grenier’s team, and she is currently working on her doctoral theses at UNED. She curated the film programme Hazañas cotidianas at Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo in 2012, and coordinated the Madrid region’s Sala de Arte Joven programme with the project Hacer en lo cotidiano (2013).
Ingrid Blanco (Havana, Cuba, 1972)
She holds a degree in Art History from the University of Havana. She has worked as a curator at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Wifredo Lam and coordinated the Theory and Criticism Meeting at the 7th Havana Biennial. She was assistant curator at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead and at the 3rd Berlin Biennale, under the direction of Ute Meta Bauer. She was coordinator and producer at the Batiscafo residence programme run by the Triangle Network, and completed the MACBA Independent Studies Programme (PEI). She co-curated, with Antonio Gagliano, La lección excéntrica at EspaiDOS in Terrassa (2001) and 100% Desván as part of the Premi Miquel Casablancas (2012). She currently works as an advisor to Tasneem Gallery.
Antonio Gagliano (Córdoba, Argentina, 1982)
He is a visual artist. He often turns to drawing and writing to explore the different ways in which knowledge emerges, is organised, and spreads. He has collaborated in research projects such as Archivo FX: La ciudad vacía (Fundació Antoni Tàpies, 2006), Peligrosidad social (MACBA, 2008-2010), Prototips en codi obert (Fundació Antoni Tàpies, 2012) and Marginalia (Arteleku, 2012-2013). His work has also been shown at Fabra i Coats (2012), the Havana Biennial (2012), Museo Abelló (2012), Espai Cultural Caja Madrid (2012), adnplatform (2013) and the arteBA-Petrobras Visual Arts Award (2013). He co-curated, with Ingrid Blanco, La lección excéntrica at EspaiDOS in Terrassa (2001) and 100% Desván as part of the Premi Miquel Casablancas (2012).
