Trained in Fine Arts at the University of the Basque Country, he is a sculptor and lecturer at the universities of Vigo and the Basque Country. His sculptural work addresses the crisis of representation, both in an individual and a social sense. Together with María Luisa Fernández, he founded the CVA collective, active between 1979 and 1985, where he created markedly Conceptual works. In addition to his artistic creation, he has organised and participated in numerous seminars, courses and workshops on artistic production in the new knowledge society and in a new global space, and has curated significant exhibitions at the Artium centre, Vitoria (2012); Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid (2010); and Museo Guggenheim, Bilbao (2007). He is the author of collections of essays, such as Corduras (2007), Ornamento y ley (2007) and Laboratorio de papeles (2006), among others.

Widely exhibited, he represented Spain at Expo 92, Seville; São Paulo Biennial (1994); and Venice Biennale (2001).
