Biography

Jordi Mitjà (Figueres, 1970) studied at the Escola d’Art, Olot, and at the Institut del Teatre, Barcelona. He currently lives and works in Lladó (Alt Empordà). His work is a complex accretion of layer upon layer of meaning, using ‘poor’ materials to pursue projects that are often linked to the artist’s immediate environment or to his stays in different geographic locations. Mitjà lays emphasis on the idea of process, with installations that are both critical and poetic in content, graphic work, video and printed publications. He draws on material extracted from everyday life, including situations, images, experiences, and archive material. Central to his work are the contradictions inherent to the art world and social critique.

He has exhibited at Espai Zero, Olot (2006); Bòlit, Centre d’Art Contemporani, Girona (2008 and 2016); Aparador del Museu Abelló (2009); Museu de l’Empordà (2010); Espai 13 of the Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona (2012); Fondazione Zimei, Pescara (2015); and Nivell Zero of the Fundació Suñol, Barcelona (2017). His work is included in the collections of the Museu de l’Empordà; Media Centre, Fundació ”la Caixa”; Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea; and MACBA, Barcelona, among others.
