Biography

Born in Japan in 1948 and settled in the United States since 1970 (first in Los Angeles and from 1974 in New York), Hiroshi Sugimoto abandoned his studies in economics and politics to take up photography, initially influenced by Conceptual art and Minimalism. Sober in appearance but complexly developed, his images reflect an interest in the use of light as an artistic material. Sugimoto usually works in series, producing his black-and-white photographs using the standard technique of a long exposure with large format cameras, resulting in a high technical quality that emphasises the stability of the image. Instead of movement, this highlights a sense of permanence and extended time, and by eliminating the notion of the decisive moment, photography becomes a pictorial exercise.
