Guillermo Kuitca
Guillermo Kuitca lives and works in Buenos Aires, where he was born in 1961 and where he had his first solo exhibition at the age of thirteen. One of the internationally better-known Latin American contemporary artists, Kuitca applies elements from architecture, theatre and cartography to his pictorial works. His paintings of maps, fragmented and intervened, of theatres and building floor plans, and beds with painted maps, suggest forgotten worlds and historical silences. Kuitca works with juxtapositions and turns territorial elements into abstractions, geometries and arbitrary surfaces with barely legible geographical evocations.
Since his participation at the 1989 São Paulo Biennale, and the 1992 Documenta, Kassel, Kuitca has exhibited in some of the most important international art centres. Among them, the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (1994–5), Fondation Cartier, Paris (2000), Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2003), Museo de Arte Latinoamericano, Buenos Aires (2003) and the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington (2010). His work is included in the collections of the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain.
