The ADAG fonds was established from documentation generated by the activities of the Assemblea Democràtica d’Artistes de Girona, collected by Narcís Selles.

Founded in March 1976 with the aim of organising creators and inserting their praxis in the struggle for social and national freedom, the Assemblea Democràtica d’Artistes de Girona (Democratic Assembly of Artists of Girona – ADAG), was a group of intellectuals and visual artists linked to a democratic opposition movement. It was particularly active for a year and a half, ending in April 1978.

This group was probably the principal motor behind the formation of a space of communication in Catalan, sending from the art world an unbroken line of action against totalitarianism during the first stage of Spain’s democratic Transition. As a group, it achieved high visibility and media coverage, demonstrating a remarkable ability to interact with the world around them. The fact that ADAG arose at a time when democratic and popular forces were gradually expanding decisively favoured the impact of its proposals.

A remarkable feature of the group was its critical stance against cultural industries and official art institutions, along with their rejection of formalist art, which they regarded as subordinated to the interests of the regime and outside the socio-political context.

ADAG supported collective action over that of the individual, promoting a social and cultural use of those spaces usually intended for institutional culture.
