Biography

Ferran Garcia Sevilla (Palma de Majorca, 1949) lives and works in Barcelona. He studied under Alexandre Cirici and at the History, History of Art and Philosophy departments at the University of Barcelona and in Palma de Majorca. From the late sixties onwards, he produced experimental and political texts, films, photographs, body art and performances that made him a significant figure within the Catalan conceptual art scene. Since the seventies, his work has drawn on the texts of scientific theorists and classical and modern philosophers, focusing on the field of linguistics and the limits of images and their representation. In the late seventies he added large-format paintings to his repertory. The exhibition Muermos at Galería G in Barcelona in 1977 was his first step into the world of painting. Garcia Sevilla is also a collector of images from a wide range of sources, and his pictorial language is consequently very diverse, integrating concepts from physics, cosmology, nature, cities, religion and the history of knowledge. His work is currently part of the collections of Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, Museo Patio Herreriano in Valladolid, Fundação Museu de Serralves in Porto, Les Abbatoirs FRAC Midi-Pyrénées in Toulouse, Centre Pompidou in Paris and MACBA.
