Stan Douglas "Hors-champs, 1992

In a context where certainty and objectivity cede terrain to interpretation and indeterminacy, Stan Douglas’s work gains relevance as he explores how technology and media affect perception and collective memory. Since the late 1980s, Douglas has worked with film, photography and multidisciplinary projects, investigating the construction of reality and history through the image. His work is noteworthy for questioning linear narratives of the past and showing how historical processes are constantly shaped by human action.

The exhibition takes a retrospective approach, highlighting his influence on the analysis of cinema, experimentation with other media and the impact he has had on generations of artists. Special attention is paid to the relationship of his work to historical moments and its continued relevance.

Influenced by jazz from an early age, Douglas frequently incorporates music into his work as a tool to engage with questions about race, class and inequality. In his new project Birth of a Nation, he investigates the connections between flamenco and Spanish politics, exploring how external forces can appropriate local cultural manifestations, altering their original meaning

The exhibition is a co-production with Jeu de Paume, where it will also be displayed from February to May 2027. The catalogue will be co-produced by the two institutions.

Stan Douglas (Canada, 1960) lives and works between Los Angeles and Vancouver. Since the 1980s, his work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions around the world. His artwork has been part of Documenta IX (1992), Documenta X (1997), Documenta XI (2002) and the Venice Biennale in 1990, 2001, 2005, 2019 and 2022 when he was chosen as Canada’s representative. He has pieces in collections around the world such as the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), the Centre George Pompidou (Paris), MOMA (New York), Pérez Art Museum (Miami), Tate Modern (London), etc.

MACBA Thirty

We celebrate Year Thirty of an infinite MACBA that projects the future as a space for revision and possibility: of taking up what was left unfinished, updating what needs it and projecting anew everything that can still be transformed.
