Echoes: Videos from the Han Nefkens Foundation Donation

The Act of Filming: Video in the MACBA Collection
Aziz Hazara "Bow Echo", 2019. Video. MACBA Collection. MACBA Consortium. Donation from the Han Nefkens Foundation

Echoes: Videos from the Han Nefkens Foundation Donation brings together a selection of works from a donation motivated by a deep commitment to supporting public collections.

Thanks to this generous act, the museum has received a set of videos that broaden and enrich understanding of the moving image within contemporary artistic practice through the work of artists from around the world.

These pieces rethink the documentary dimension of video and open the moving image up to more fragmentary and associative forms of construction. Texture, sound and materiality are central to the experience, shifting the idea of a closed narrative towards a more open and permeable form of writing. Video is configured as a place for critical listening, relating and reflecting, where the poetic and documentary dimensions become inextricably entangled.

With the support of

Video-Nou, 1979
The Act of Filming: Video in the MACBA Collection explores the presence of video in the MACBA Collection by bringing together three moments and contexts linked to the moving image: material from the Video-Nou collective, later Servei de Vídeo Comunitari (active in Catalonia in the late 1970s and early 1980s); video works from the Han Nefkens Foundation donation (produced between 2012 and 2021); and a programme of screenings of films by Pere Portabella (produced between 1960 and 2020) as part of the “Acció Portabella” initiative marking his centenary.
