As part of Barcelona’s Festival GREC 2023, the MACBA is hosting the lecture performance Sand in the Eyes by Lebanese artist Rabih Mroué, which combines documentary and fiction film footage that the artist uses to reflect on different ways that violence is represented.

What can audiovisual propaganda tell us about the people who created it? Using various research materials, such as Islamist recruitment videos obtained by German intelligence agents, Mroué asks what they can tell us about their producers or about their ability to recruit young Islamists, while questioning how the government and society deal with this propaganda material.

This lecture forms part of the programme Focus Rabih Mroué, which is putting on other activities by the artist at the Filmoteca de Catalunya, Teatre Lliure and Fabra i Coats: Fàbrica de Creació.

After the lecture, the artist will have a conversation with María Berríos, Director of Curatorial Programmes and Research.
