This year’s programme opens with a concert by the artist, filmmaker and musician Luke Fowler and the experimental musician Richard Youngs: a concert-performance in which they practice a kind of idiorhythmia that mixes Fowler’s electronic music and Young’s creative drive. Given their heterogenous musical education, which goes from classical piano and guitar to experiments with punk rock and D.I.Y. music, in their concerts they explore the power of the ludic through a variety of musical genres.

Luke Fowler has developed a practice that is, at the same time, singular and collaborative, poetic and political, structural and documentary, archival and deeply human. With an emphasis on communities of people, outward thinkers and the history of the left, his 16mm films tell the stories of alternative movements in Britain, from psychiatry to photography to music to education. He regularly works with such sound artists as Toshiya Tsunoda, Lee Patterson, Mark Fell, Eric La Casa, Jean Luc Guionnet, Marcus Schmickler, John Chantler and Richard McMaster.

Richard Youngs has been involved with music for most of his life. He discovered the power of the art form by thumping the family piano as an angry 5-year-old. In the intervening 45+ years he has attempted to harness the same experimental, naive, playful power in his live performances and in all of his 140 releases. Adopting guerrilla recording techniques, the independent D.I.Y. ethic is at his core. He attempts not to repeat himself, every leap of faith is an expression of Richard Youngs' essential Youngs-ness.
