Documenta 7 was held in the German city of Kassel in the summer of 1982. One of the artists selected for the event – curated by Rudi Fuchs – was Miquel Barceló, who was then virtually unknown on the international art scene.

The exhibition held at MACBA in 1998 set out to reconstruct the spirit of Documenta 7 in condensed form, and, like the German exhibition, its frame of reference was the current European painting of the time.

The MACBA exhibition included works by Miquel Barceló, Georg Baselitz, Sandro Chia, Jiri Georg Dokoupil, Markus Lüpertz, A.R. Penck and Arnulf Rainer.
