Ethics of Care, 1999

The artist, writer and cultural producer María Ruido (Ourense, 1967), graduate in the History of Contemporary Art from the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1991 and doctor in Fine Arts from the University of Vigo in 2000, has also studied Painting and Theory of Art in Contemporary Art at the Centro de Arte e Comunicacão Visual in Lisbon.

Born into a working class family outside the art world, María Ruido occasionally uses experiences from her own life or her family’s to her artistic projects in a specific historical and chronological framework.

As a film-maker, Ruido has been producing interdisciplinary projects since 1995 on the social construction of the body and identity/identities, women's imagination as regards work and the forms of construction of collective and personal memory. Her basic supports are video and photography, associated in some cases with texts written by the artist.

As a cultural producer, with Uqui Permui she has coordinated the project Cuerpos de producción: miradas críticas y relatos feministas en torno a los sujetos sexuados en los espacios públicos (Production bodies: critical gazes and feminist accounts around sexed subjects in public places). Santiago de Compostela, CGAC, March 2002 – March 2003.

Since 2001, with the artist Virginia Villaplana and the cultural manager Montse Romaní, she has been a member of the work group El Sueño Colectivo.

She lives in Barcelona where she is a lecturer in the Department of Design and Image in the Fine Arts Faculty of the University of Barcelona.
