Star, 1988
Graphic material, 38 x 50 cm

Visual poetry means investigating an unknown area between the visual and the semantic. This is an area yet to be defined. It is neither drawing nor painting but a means of communication. It belongs to a new creativity that extends the concept of artistic profession. I've argued with designers because I am not one, and to make visual poetry I need their help. At first the problem was that I wanted to explain myself with a minimum of elements and they wanted to complicate things: painting colourful backgrounds, having fancy typefaces, etc.

When asked which work I like most, I always reply that it’s the one that hasn’t been done yet. I understand creation as an adventure, a parabola that opens itself up to infinity, forming a curve that should never be closed. Art is a process, and a halt in this process means a repetition. To repeat means falling into a formula and repeating formulas is what many young artists do to sell pictures... Me, I’m attracted to the unknown. An action once taken is an empty sack.
