El Eco I, 1972
El Eco I and II are two screenprints inspired by the building of the Museo Experimental El Eco, which is located in San Rafael, Mexico City. Since its construction in 1953, this architectural work by Mathias Goeritz has become one of his most significant buildings and holds a central place in the history of modern Mexican art. Constructed at the request of businessman Daniel Mont, it has been put to various uses: as a gallery, restaurant-bar, experimental theatre space and a place of activism. It is now a university museum.
The two screenprints apply similar solutions to space as those employed in the museum architecture, avoiding right angles, symmetry and static geometry, and inviting the viewer to movement and an exaggerated perspective. As in the building, Goeritz uses abstraction to integrate movement and the vitality of form.
One year after the construction of the museum, Goeritz wrote his Manifesto of Emotional Architecture. The building is the finest example of a type of architecture that seeks to integrate an organic and emotional experience of space. Colour, lighting, water and the irregular geometry of the architectural forms highten certain human senses. El Eco was to mark the highpoint of the artist’s subsequent production.
