Danica Dakic

Danica Dakic was born in Sarajevo in 1962, and lives and works in both Sarajevo and Düsseldorf. She studied at the Fine Arts Faculty in Belgrade and the Academies of Art in both Sarajevo and Düsseldorf. Over the course of her artistic career, she has worked in the fields of photography, video, film and sound installations. In recent years, she has participated in a number of biennials and exhibitions, including the group exhibition How do we want to be governed? at Miami Art Central and at the 5th Biennial of Cetinje, Yugoslavia, at which she presented her work Deaf Dance.

Danica Dakic creates sculptural installations, location-specific video projections and public architecture sound projects, to investigate the corporal and global aspects of identity and language, as well as the tensions that arise between collective and individual experiences. Her work explores the scope of cultural, person, political and geographical identity. The artist questions the subject of building an identity and of the "home” resulting from the impact of social change, globalisation and war, based on her own experience as an emigrant. An insistence on the importance of language, of the spoken word, on the formation of identity, is a constant theme in her work.
