Construcció lírica, 1934

Considered to be one of the country’s first kinetic artists, much of Leandre Cristòfol’s work concerns the idea of movement. Stimulated by the works of Àngel Ferrant as well as Alexander Calder and Jean Tinguely, Construcció lírica (Lyrical Construction) responds to the quest for balance between movement and stasis. Close to Duchamp and his experiments with chance, this sculpture incorporates ‘poor’ found materials and different textures into assemblages of heterogeneous objects. The wooden structure dominating the work introduces straight lines and a static element, while the spiral wire adds a rhythmic and dynamic action. Despite its apparent simplicity, the balance of the diagonals and the wire that envelops and interlaces the forms articulate an ensemble of great coherence. As in other works, Cristòfol achieves the poetics of the found object.
