The land out to sea and the sea on land

In days of urban silence, Fina Miralles’ translations remind us of the importance of context.

Premià de Mar beach, November 1973: Fina Miralles initiates a series of actions called Translacions (Translations). First, she displaces a section of grassed turf out to sea. Days later, she moves the sand from a dune on the beach to the middle of a field: ‘… it derives from the awareness that each element has a space and, therefore, a context’, wrote the critic Alexandre Cirici. By changing the place and space, the artist emphasises the importance of these elements, as well as the idea of context.
