Would you support the life of a stranger? LOVE, care, and gravity in Carlos Motta’s great metaphor

The Collectables of the Year Thirty

In 2024, the Vermelho Gallery in São Paulo commissioned a new project from Carlos Motta. The result was Gravidade, a performance by Motta and eight other local performers. Conceived as a choral movement, it began with a set of drawings by Motta showing a scorched desert landscape in which hundreds of people hold, carry and take care of each other. Following this visual score, the performers carry out a series of actions to support each other. To music composed by Luisa Lemgruber, they fight with exaggerated slowness against the force of gravity while investigating ideas such as care, resistance, weight and survival. With love, care, resistance, mutual attunement, trust, and a remarkable ability to enter into another’s body and sustain it from a shared sense of humanity, the performers find cautious and tender ways to hold, carry and endure the weight of their companions’ bodies for as long as possible, creating scenes of sustained resistance that address the fundamental question raised by Motta: Would you support the life of a stranger?
