Velázquez Price 2024
“Our work is supposed to be the mirror image of ourselves, but like everything a mirror reflects, as if it were a studio photograph, it suffers from the excesses of lipstick and makeup, of the side that flatters us the most and supposedly disguises the implicit ridicule of showing what we are not in every social projection. I’m not saying that the work of an artist is necessarily a lie, which it is; it is also a great truth, but one remodelled by the tailor of language and symbolic manipulation.”
Congratulations to Francesc Torres, winner of the 2024 Velázquez Price for Plastic Arts awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. We recover the words of the one of the artists with a wide and prominent presence in the MACBA Collection, when in 2018 he presented his unique cabinet of wonders in the exhibition The Hermetic Bell. Space for a Non-Transferable Anthropology. MACBA had already presented the exhibition Francesc Torres. Da Capo in 2008. Here you can listen to some of the conversations with the artist recorded at MACBA over the years.
