The Power of FRAGILITY. Lara Fluxà and Stella Rahola Matutes
One of the materials associated with fragility is glass. Yet, in its delicate fragility, glass hides a great malleability and a horizon of possibilities. An ambivalence, both physical and conceptual, depending on whether we see glass as an object or as a process that has always inspired the artistic tradition. A tension that is enjoying a renewed interest with the abundance of ideas proposed by some artists included in the MACBA Collection, such as Lara Fluxà and Stella Rahola Matutes. By bringing this material closer to notions such as the balance of ecosystems and organic life, they value ancestral knowledge and a technique passed down from generation to generation, but from a more material and clearly experimental position. It is interesting to see how, in the immersive installations made with pieces of glass by Fluxà or Rahola, the viewer changes, without even noticing, the rhythm and speed as they approach the works. With its essential fragility, glass challenges our physical condition in a direct, sensorial and almost corporeal manner. And this is what lies behind its power.
