The Blue Soul
‘The woman, the fountain, the river, the sea, the ocean, the blue soul. Eternal movement, deep roots, the immensity of time.’ Water plays a prominent role in the work of Fina Miralles. As far back as the 1970s, when she created a series of actions titled Relacions (Relationships), in an action from 1975 the artist dived into the sea and swam away towards the horizon. In her paintings, the first mermaid appeared in 1989. And it is from the depths of the sea and from the undulations of the water that the mermaids, the women, the mediators and prophetesses take centre stage in Miralles’ work. In 2014, the artist swam in the waters off Cap de Creus while a camera captured her trail in a ‘photo action’ called El rastre de la sirena (The Mermaid’s Trail). It is Miralles herself who, interviewed by Mireia Sallarès in an unmissable video, explains: ‘The important thing is the water that sings, that is alive. The water sings, the birds, the angels, the mermaids, the whales all sing and we sing.’ Happy summer holidays!
