O gentlemen, the time of life is short

Oriol Vilapuig’s imago mundi

Shakespearean quotes, anarchist slogans, old inscriptions, lines from Kafka, Leonard Cohen and Joséphine Baker, as well as other textual elements from the Western tradition, strike a dialogue with small human and animal figures in a vast collage. oriol vilapuig has composed a mural about life and death that revisits the pictorial tradition. Inspired by the work of Hieronymus Bosch, vilapuig summons up excessive figures and grotesque characters to remind us of the brevity of life. A contemporary imago mundi that reads: ‘A fanfare is a short and lively-sounding musical piece for trumpets, saxophones and other brass instruments, often accompanied by percussion.’ Otranto Fanfarria, by oriol vilapuig, has its own musical score: Niséh Radéh. Le profezie e le maschere, composed by Riccardo Massari Spirittini, a sound artist and composer who has been interpreting vilapuig’s imaginary since the year 2000.

‘MACBA Collection: Prelude. Poetic Intention’. A group exhibition that aims to reverse the dramaturgy of the museum by putting the artwork at the centre so we can address its will, its energy and its poetic intention.
