Martin Vitaliti’s counter-narrative
Martín Vitaliti takes elements circulating in mass culture such as comics, cinema, advertising and literature, to question the languages and discourses that shape them, their ideology and their codes, an initiative constructed around visual representation, metalanguage, reproduction, authorship and originality. Turning their usual codes upside down, Vitaliti gives them new, often unexpected readings. Such is the case in this work, #127, from 2016, which is part of a series of intervened comics spanning the period 2009 to 2019, and which Vitaliti names with a numerical figure together with the hashtag that labels topics on social networks. #127 is an exercise in formal experimentation that disassociates comics and stories. A collage in which Vitaliti covers a surface with comic book pages from which many panels have been eliminated. Overlapping grids convey an impression of narrative structure. In the few panels that have not been intervened, solitary characters appear in different scenarios that never coincide or meet each other. Superimposing, decontextualising, retouching, intervening and resignifying is the new counter-narrative exercise that the artist proposes.
