Filming each other

Two 16mm films are projected onto two facing walls. The recorded images show an intense negotiation with space, body and image by the artist, Dan Graham, in collaboration with the choreographer Simone Forti. Holding a camera, the two performers move slowly while recording each other.

As Forti rotates the camera around her own body in an ascending helix, Graham spirals around her. On the wall we see the recordings of the two cameras, which have become a mechanical yet sensitive appendage of their bodies. Fragmenting the gaze by making it jump from one screen to the other, the installation undermines the cinematic device.
