Covering the wall of a boarded-up apartment with literature
‘In October 2013 I did an installation in the building where I’ve been living for the past fifteen years. I stuck four large-format literary texts to the doors of four flats, recently occupied by my neighbours, which the administrator of the property – who systematically ignores the residents’ problems – had had blocked up with bricks and cement. I called my project Literatura de replà, una relectura (Literature on the landing, A Rereading)’.
The account of the events leading up to this action completes the work of this artist who could never have imagined the effects of her intervention, which ranged from booksellers who occupied one of the empty flats and took it upon themselves to act as guides for people who came to see Literatura de replà, the occupation of another flat, a community dinner attended by all the residents – old and new – in the building, the court case that followed the eviction order and the fact that the defence used the intervention as part of the evidence. Mireia Sallarès presents a fragment of one of the walls blocking up the doors, a recording of the dinner, the arguments of the lawyer and other documents from the court proceedings as integral parts of her work.
