Small tables supporting bigger tables and chairs acting as legs. Inmensa (Immense) is a construction by Cildo Meireles made of sapele wood. The artist appropriates ordinary domestic objects such as tables and chairs and alters their normal configuration and proportions, thus creating an architectural object in which, against all common sense, the small elements support the larger ones.

In the process, Meireles questions the notions of balance and hierarchy not only of the objects themselves, but of the social, political and economic structures. Minimalism is present in the aesthetic language, the geometry of the elements and the idea of series. A much larger version of the work, made of steel, is located in a public park in Brumadinho, in the Brazilian region of Belo Horizonte.
