Miquel Barceló 1987-1997

Miquel Barceló is one of the most notable contemporary Spanish artists. Through his own unmistakable language, the artist has maintained and revitalized the use of drawing as a medium of artistic expression. The retrospective, organized by the MACBA in 1998, focused on his works from 1987-1997, which consist of a few sculptures and an abundant quantity of oils and watercolours. These pieces are steeped in the artist’s own experiences in Africa. Light, materials, people, and a new, vivid intimacy and creative power all define the context of these works, which are all products of Barceló’s travel journals. The catalogue includes texts in French which Barceló wrote from Africa. The introduction by Pep Subirós, two articles–Bernard Goy, Hervé Landry–, some bibliographical notes, and a careful documentation of the works on display complete the catalogue.
