Backyard Economy I, 1974
Filmed in the language of a home movie and set in the backyard of a small suburban house, Backyard Economy I documents women’s domestic chores. Together with Backyard Economy II (Diane Germain Mowing) and Flower Fields, this is one of only three works by Martha Rosler filmed in Super 8. Here the artist records the silent scenes of a woman hanging the laundry in the sun, while questioning, as the title indicates, the underlying domestic economy in the hands of women.
