Awnings 1-5, 2001

Installation, 5 elements of various dimensions
Known for her Post-Minimalist sculptures that are close to industrial design and modern architecture, Rita McBride takes visible but almost anonymous elements from the urban landscape in order to interpret their dimensions and materials. Pipes, air-conditioning systems and public seating are transformed into sculptures when placed in the context of a museum.
Awnings 1–5 consists of five purple structures hanging from the wall. As the form and title of the work suggests, it recalls those awnings or canopies that give sheltered access to establishments like boutiques or restaurants. Their placement inside the museum space modifies their function and utility, turning them into sculptural elements.
