Activity - Conflict and Documentary Practices | MACBA Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona

Coinciding with the exhibition dedicated to the photographer Ahlam Shibli (Palestine 1970), MACBA is organising a seminar to debate the critical function of documentary practices. The articulation of specific visual policies in the context of conflict zones suggests that the relation between aesthetic and political representation is not a very productive one. Far from being opposed, these two forms of representation tend to identify with one another. Starting with these new documentary practices, the seminar will also discuss new forms of governability.

T.J. Demos, critic and reader in the Department of Art History, University College London

6 pm: The Art of Disappearance: A Palestinian Variation
Esmail Nashif, anthropologist, writer and art critic, he currently works as a lecturer at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev

7 pm: Round table
With the participation of João Fernandes, co-curator of the exhibition and Deputy Director at MNCARS, Madrid; Marta Gili, co-curator of the exhibition and Director of the Jeu de Paume, Paris; Carles Guerra, co-curator of the exhibition and Chief Curator at MACBA; and Ulrich Loock, writer and art critic.
