Starting from the notion of ‘deformation’ that Freud outlined in Moses and Monotheism, Luis Pérez-Oramas claims the existence of a multitude of peripheral modernities that canonical art history has tended to ignore. For Freud, the word Entstellung (deformation, disfiguration, dislocation) not only involves changing the look of something, but also changing its place. In this way, modernities like those of Latin America, exceed the limits approved by monotheistic Eurocentric modernity to become topological alterities of it, displaced and distorted.
