In the 1940s, already installed in the United States, Josef Albers experimented with printmaking using various media, such as wood. Having abandoned the technique of silkscreen printing a few years earlier, the artist rediscovered the medium with the creation of xylographs that incorporated the variables of chance and free association, replacing the abstract precision for which he was known. In the mid-1940s, he experimented with different surfaces such as wood, linoleum and cork, where he developed reliefs in which the weight of the selected materials became a key element of the composition.
